Synopsis[edit | edit source]

The video begins with Ernie taking a walk around the corner (saying hello to Erica and Fred along the way), when suddenly he finds a key on the ground. When he picks it up, he reads that it's for room #7 in the Furry Arms. Ernie decides to visit the hotel to show it to employees, Humphrey and Ingrid. When he walks up to the entrance, he wakes up Benny Rabbit from his break. When Humphrey and Ingrid see the key, they suggest they should ask anyone if they're in room 7 by looking here and there and up and down and hither and yon, but Ernie has a better idea. He puts the key in the mailbox for room 7. Humphrey and Ingrid aren't sure how he knew where to find the mailbox for room 7 so quickly, so Ernie shows them that the mailbox has a number 7 labeled. He teaches them to count with a song - "That's How the Numbers Go". Benny at first denies to sing along, but in the end he does so anyway.

An unnamed blue monster comes in and asks for his misplaced room key. Ingrid asks him he's by any chance in room 7, and the monster accepts. Humphrey lends the missing key to him. Humphrey and Ingrid think Ernie should work at the hotel and show him the wonders of the hotel business. They even allow him to meet a Dinger and instruct him that whenever he needs something, he should just ding the Dinger.

As Ernie wonders how many times he should ding first, the Dinger displays a number 1, and Ernie dings once. It summons Benny Rabbit bringing in one bucket of ice, but Ernie says he doesn't want any ice. He tells him he dings once to see what would happen. Benny is convinced that Ernie wants to know what happens when the Dinger is dinged. He explains that any number of times the Dinger is dinged tells him what needs to be done; Ernie dinged once, and Benny brings in one bucket of ice. He then asks Ernie and the Dinger to leave him alone.

Song: Ten muppet numbers sing "One" (from A Chorus Line).

Ernie decides to ding two times. After dinging twice, Benny brings in two towels, but Ernie says he doesn't want any towels either; he knows that if he dings twice, he gets two towels.

Song: "Holy Cow, It's Number 2"

Benny yells at Ernie not to ding twice again. Ernie decides to ding three times. This makes Benny bring in three pillows. In frustration, he drops the pillows and shouts "YOU AGAIN! I THOUGHT YOU SAID YOU WEREN'T GONNA DING ANYMORE!" Ernie said he didn't ding twice, but three times. Benny: "This is getting irritating!"

Song: "Count It 1-2-3"

Animation: Number Guy #4

Song: MC Elmo sings "Five Jive".

Benny, who has brought in five bars of exclusive Furry Arms brand soap with lanolin, warns Ernie that if he doesn't want the soap, he shouldn't have dinged the Dinger five times. Then the phone rings. Ernie picks it up and hands the phone to Humphrey. Some penguins are calling and ask for "fish, fish, fish, fish, fish, fish." Humphrey doesn't understand how many, so Ernie explains that he should count the fish. He asks Humphrey to say the order and Ernie will count it. Every time Humphrey says "fish", Ernie counts them up to six. While Humphrey and Ingrid go to the kitchen for six fish, Ernie dings the Dinger some more.

Song: Elmo sings "Seven Goldfish".

Live-action: Colorblock grid: #8

Animation: "Martian Beauty #9"

Song: Counting Vacation

Benny has brought in ten glasses of milk, but Ernie says he isn't even thirsty. He counts the ten glasses, but Benny tells him, "Next time you feel like dinging the Dinger ten times, FORGET ABOUT IT!" and then walks away in a huff. Then Ernie sees some puppies chewing on the lobby furniture. Ernie suggests they need a bone to chew on, but since the puppies are running everywhere, Humphrey and Ingrid end up losing count. Ernie has a solution: he can get the puppies to be cuddled. Humphrey counts the three puppies, and while he goes to the kitchen for a bone, the dogs begin to follow him.

Animation: Rap #11

Song: "Honk Around the Clock"

Animation: 13 hamburgers

Next, the Dinger displays the number 14, but he ends up wanting to be dinged 14 times himself. This makes Benny bring in 14 pieces of luggage and frustratedly blames Ernie, but Ernie tells him it was the Dinger who dinged. Surprised, Benny collapses under the luggage. Ernie asks if Benny's okay. Benny replies, "Leave me alone, I'm on my break!"

Animation: Number Creatures #14

Ernie assumes that Benny seems to be tired and shouldn't be bothered some more, when the Dinger displays a number 15, causing Ernie to decide to ding 15 times to see what happens. After dinging 15 times, Benny asks him if he wants to see what happens since he dinged the Dinger 15 times. After Ernie accepts, Benny shouts, "Come on in, boys!" A herd of elephants stampede into the hotel and Ernie counts 14. Benny asks Ernie if he's satisfied in counting 15 elephants, but Ernie corrects that there were 14 at first before Benny showed up. The last elephant pushes Benny off-screen when Benny yells "FIFTEEN!" and Ernie says "Bye-bye, Benny!"

Animation: Masked March #15

Humphrey and Ingrid thank Ernie for teaching them how to count, when suddenly they couldn't find anything else to count, and they hug each other and cry. Ernie, however cheers them up, takes them outside the Furry Arms, and sings one final song called "Count with Me", showing everyone there's lots of things to count.
